Now, more than ever it is important to address issues of race and bias in early childhood settings. Children notice race at a very early age and can begin to categorize people according to skin color. This webinar presents strategies for creating an anti-racist environment to promote the development of healthy racial identities.

About the Host
Rosemarie Allen has served as a leader in early childhood education for nearly 40 years. Her life's work is centered on ensuring children have access to high quality early childhood programs that are developmentally and culturally appropriate. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Education at Metropolitan State University of Denver. Her classes are focused on ensuring teachers are aware of how issues of equity, privilege, and power impact teaching practices. She is also the President & CEO for the Institute for Racial Equity & Excellence. In 2012, Dr. Allen was appointed a Global Leader for Young Children by the World Forum on Early Care and Education. She collaborates with professionals and advocates from more than 80 countries who meet to share inspiration and information on issues impacting children and families worldwide. Rosemarie earned her B. A. from California State University, M.Ed from Lesley University and EdD in Equity and Leadership in Education at the University of Colorado, Denver.
Dorothy Shapland, Metropolitan State University of Denver
Dorothy Shapland, Ed.D., is an assistant professor in the department of Special Education, Early Childhood, and Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Education at MSU Denver, with more than 30 years of experience as an early childhood educator. Dr. Shapland provides professional development workshops and conference presentations on issues of equity, stress and trauma, and it's impacts on young children and their teachers.
Iheoma Iruka, HighScope Educational Research Foundation
Iheoma U. Iruka, Ph.D., is the Chief Research Innovation Officer and Director of The Center for Early Education Research and Evaluation at HighScope Educational Research Foundation after tenure at FPG Child Development Institute at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and the Buffett Institute at the University of Nebraska. Dr. Iruka is engaged in projects and initiatives focused on how evidence-informed policies, systems, and practices in early education can support the optimal development and experiences of low-income and ethnic minority children, such as through family engagement and support, quality rating and improvement systems, and early care and education systems and programs. She has been engaged in addressing how best to ensure excellence for young diverse learners, especially Black children, such as through development of a classroom observation measure, examination of non-traditional pedagogical approaches, public policies, and publications geared towards early education practitioners and policymakers.Dr. Iruka has served or serves on numerous national boards and committee, including the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine committees on Supporting Parents of Young Children, and Applying Neurobiological and Socio-behavioral Sciences from Prenatal through Early Childhood Development: A Health Equity Approach.
Jennifer Neitzel, Educational Equity Institute
Dr. Jen Neitzel is the Executive Director of the Educational Equity Institute, which is focused on eliminating the educational and opportunity gaps within communities through systems level change. Prior to this work, Jen was a Research Scientist and Technical Assistance Provider at FPG Child Development Institute at UNC-Chapel Hill for 15 years. During her time at FPG, her work focused on implicit bias; disparities in suspensions and expulsions; trauma; and culturally responsive anti-bias practices. Jen presents frequently at state and national conferences and is widely published in peer-reviewed journals. She also is the author of the book Achieving Equity and Justice in Education through the Work of Systems Change.
